Kane
I jogged up the stairs to my apartment. The night air had been refreshing as I drove into town with all the windows to the SUV down. Virginia rarely had perfect weather, and I liked to enjoy it when I could. Whistling, I unlocked the door and bounded inside, ready to load the boxes and get back to my new family.
I saw the ax coming just in time to move to the left. To kill a vampire, the head or heart must be completely removed from the body. My reflexes prevented total decapitation, but I felt the sharp blade sever my spine and blood poured.
The ground rushed up to meet me, my head settling at a weird angle considering where my body was. There was no pain. Only surprise. How had I not heard or smelled the attacker?
Ah. Trinity. She loomed over me, ax resting on her shoulder. "You just couldn’t work with me, could you, Kane? We could’ve made it work." She tutted and raised the ax but froze with it in the air.
"Shit." Her exclamation was followed by her disappearance as the ax clattered to the ground beside my head. I heard the popping sound of a portal opening and cut my eyes as far as I could to see who was about to come through. How are my ears and eyes still working?
My mother stepped out of the portal, dressed in a ball gown and tiara. What the hell had she been doing in Hell? I tried to chuckle, but my vocal cords weren’t working. Cut in half. I tried to mouth her name, but my lips wouldn’t move right.
"Shhh, I’ll deal with this. You’re an idiot for letting her get the drop on you." She crouched beside me, blood soaking into her dress. "You should’ve known better than to go anywhere alone. Where is your guard? Where are your new mates?" She lifted my body like it was a child’s and lined it up with my head. With firm, gentle hands, she turned my head. "Gotta line this up right." I was looking straight up at the ceiling.
When she had me positioned how she wanted me, she placed her wrist over my mouth. I looked at it dumbly. Even if I wasn’t shocked that she was going to offer me her blood—which I’d never before heard of her doing—my muscles wouldn’t respond and open my mouth. I blew air out of my nose in consternation, then when none came out, I realized my lungs weren’t attached to my airways anymore. I had no breath to blow out my nose. My head must’ve been connected by a few blood vessels and some skin.
"Shit, son. You’re a mess."
I wanted to tell her she could’ve prevented all of it, but my brain chose that moment to black out.
When I woke, my hands gripped her wrist, and I was drinking blood from her wrist at an alarming pace. I tried to make myself let go, but I couldn’t. It was unlike anything I’d ever tasted.
